Washington Recreation Trail

Construction of Phase III has begun!!

On July 7th construction on Phase III of the Washington Recreation Trail began. The new portion of the trail will pick up at Dallas Road & Newcastle and connect to the existing trail by Washington Central Grade School. Another section of the trail will begin at the end of the current trail in Washington Park and extend between Lincoln School and the Washington Park District administration offices. The trail will branch to the north to Main Street and to the south around the edge of Lincoln School property to the Jackson Street right of way. The final section consist of paving the gravel trail from Jefferson Street to Monroe Street along the abandoned rail bed. The total project is anticipated to cost approximately $400,000. This project is being funded, in part, with State of Illinois Bike Path Grant Program funding assistance made available through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The grant will cover 50% of the project expenses up to $200,000.

Washington Park District has been working cooperatively with a number of entities to complete this phase of the recreation trail. The City of Washington , School Districts 51 and 52 have granted easements and permission to use existing right of ways for the trail. Personal property owners have also been cooperative in granting easements on their property. Mr. Gary Moehle on behalf of the Washington Commercial Park Trust and Mr. Milton Heilman as executor for Hazel Heilman are allowing use of an easement that will connect the Cummings Rd. north/south leg to the Trail’s Edge subdivision section.

Washington Park District also received a land donation from Tri-County Homes, Inc. for the purpose of developing a neighborhood park and the extension of the Washington Recreation Trail in the Trail’s Edge subdivision. Two linear parcels on the southern edge of the subdivision development equaling 2.4 acres were donated to extend the Washington Recreation Trail from the Moehle Trust property on the west to Dallas Rd. on the east. An additional 4.9 acre parcel was donated to create a neighborhood park which will border Kingsbury Rd. on the south, Grandyle Dr. on the west and Agnes St. on the east. Plans are currently being developed and improvements will begin in the spring.

A special thanks to everyone who has made this Recreation Trail possible.
